Patricia Merritt is a consummate communications professional, a veteran journalist and an insightful writer and poet who speaks with an honest, genuine and probing voice that comes from years of hard work, diligence and a commitment to excellence.

Currently, Ms. Merritt is the Assistant to the Director of Marketing & External Affairs at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. For more than 11 years she has worked to market and promote SIUE and its Mission, Vision and Values. For almost 10 of those years, Ms. Merritt worked in the capacity as Public Relations Director at the SIUE East St. Louis Center. There she promoted the Center’s services, which included a Head Start, a charter school, a performing arts and after-school tutorial programs that help “Empower People and Strengthen Communities.”

In addition, Ms. Merritt operates her freelance Marketing and Communications business, Moving Beyond Barriers, and is a writer for Echoes, a multicultural line of Sunday school books for the David C. Cook Publishing Company in Colorado Springs, Colorado. For the past 12 years, Ms. Merritt has produced creative, inspirational and instructional material for the Sunday school books that are distributed nationwide.

Ms. Merritt is also a member of the Eugene B. Redmond (EBR) Writers Club. The Writers Club is named for famed poet, author and editor Dr. Eugene B. Redmond. The Club also originated the unique poetic device, the Kwansaba, which is fast becoming known worldwide. The Club publishes the annual poetry anthology, Drumvoices Revue, in which Ms. Merritt’s work has been featured. She has also performed with the EBR Writers Club Soular Systems.

As a newspaper journalist for almost 20 years, Ms. Merritt established a reputation of reporting with accuracy and integrity. She interviewed such internationally known figures as the late Johnny Cochran, Shirley Chisholm and Alex Haley and covered such news events as Nelson Mandela’s U.S. Freedom Tour and the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet’s Peace Jam.

Ms. Merritt holds a Master of Arts in Communications and Bachelor of Science in Journalism with a minor in English.

She is currently working on such writing projects as fiction novels, poetry and children’s books.
